The best fairy tales are the real ones
It was 1981 and I was 6 years old. My mother, who lived in London in her 20's and was always a bit of an anglophile, woke me up at 3 or 4 am. Greeting with a cup of hot chocolate, we sat together in the dark, and watched the making of a real-life princess.
I have vivid memories of sitting there watching the procession of Lady -soon to be Princess - Diana. In her fabulous white fairy tale gown, her crown and that TRAIN...it was like my princess books come to life. I was enchanted. My mom, who always loved Charles, cried. It's a memory I will have for the rest of my life.
While we all know how that fairy tale ended, we now have a new Princess tale to fantasize about... the little "commoner" girl who meets the dashing prince at school and wins his heart. Now in line to possibly be Queen of England one day. It's the stuff Disney movies are made of.
Congrats to Prince William and Kate! SO CAN'T WAIT for that wedding! I may need to have a sleepover with my mom that night.

I was staying with my best friend in Canada for a month. We woke up at 4am to watch the wedding live. 16 years later I was out with that same friend and some others for my bachelorette party when the waiter came to our table and said "Did you hear, Princess Di is dead." I'll never forget either of those days. I hope William and Kate have a long and happy life together.
On the other hand, I tell my girls Charles' fairy tale all the time. "There was once a handsome Prince who was in love with a wonderful woman. Sadly, they grew apart and both married other people, but they never really stopped loving each other. They were both unhappy in their marriages. It was even more sad that his wife was tragically killed, but after so many years and so much heartache, the Prince and his true love were finally able to be reunited, and lived happily ever after."
I totally remember getting up as well. I was the only one in the house who got up in the dark, wrapped myself in a blanket and sat on the couch in total awe. I absolutely loved it. I was 10 at the time. I remember the details as if it happened yesterday and I can't wait to watch the next royal wedding!
Oh, I so remember that wedding. And what a special memory to have with your mom. You'll def need a sleepover with her for the next big royal wedding.
i'm so excited!!!! the brits, i have to say, are non-plussed. they're just focused on how much of their taxes are going to go to paying for the wedding (fair enough-- although, my taxes will go to this too, and i'm still excited). :)
I'm excited. I remember the wedding and stayed up very late watching the funeral. I also was living in London during the Queen's Golden Jubilee and the Queen Mum's funeral. It's quite something how the entire country grinds to a halt when there's something going on with the royal family. It's pretty cool. That being said, having been a tax payer over there, and believe me if you had 60% of everything you make plus an 18% sales tax, and all sorts of other crazy taxes, ummm...you might not be a supporter. There are many people who are not fans of the royal family, and I get it.
