Conversations with a Preschooler

Day: Friday

Time: 12:30ish

Place: In the car

Lucas: Where are we going Mommy?

Me: We are going to meet Daddy at work for lunch.

Lucas: Where?

Me: We are going to get Daddy from his job.

Lucas: MY Daddy? Jason?

Me: Yes, Lucas - Your Daddy, Jason (??? what other Daddy's do we meet for lunch?)

Lucas: At his job?

Me: Yes, at his job. Do you know what Daddy does?

Lucas: He makes money.

Me: Well, yes. But do you know what his job is? Do you know what Daddy does all day?

Lucas: Yea.. uh.. he dresses up like a pirate and fights clowns!

Being Pregnany is equivalent to insanity; or being stoned

A few years back Jason's mom gave me this wonderful cookbook (yes, at first we did joke that it was her way of going "hint hint"). It was the fund raiser cookbook for the elementary school she worked at in Omaha. You know the kinds, where all the parents donate a favorite recipe and the compile them all together and sell books with 15 different ways to make "Olive Garden's Italian dressing" for $15 each.

But I will say, this is the best damn cookbook. I don't know why, but everything in there is a tried and true Midwestern comfort food favorite and we have not made ONE bad thing from it yet. We even had a whole "dinner party" using recipes only from that book.

Tomorrow is Lucas' last basketball game, and following the game is the "team party" where all the kids will get their first trophy's with their name misspelled. Its a pot luck and I offered to bring a "salad". Immediately I thought of my fave salad from the cookbook of delight, the world famous Top Ramen Cabbage Salad. Pretty much I take FULL advantage of making this salad whenever I get the chance.

Flipping through the little cookbook, looking for this recipe, my eyes happened to fall on something else. A special treat. Something utterly disgusting yet delicious. Puppy Chow.

6 cups Crispix cereal

1/2 cup peanut butter

1/2 cup butter

12 ounce chocolate chips

2 cups powdered sugar

Melt peanut butter, butter and chocolate chips together in the microwave or on the stove. Stir into cereal. Put powdered sugar in a paper sack. Put cereal mixture in and shake until well coated.

Like a crack whore needing her junk, I fixated on this. "I have chocolate chips and peanut butter and butter.. just need the Crispix cereal..." On the way to the store its all I thought about. The cereal was the first thing in my cart, causing me to throw off my normal grocery store rotation almost making me forget to buy milk. I even put Lucas to be 20 minutes early so that I could start to make my confection.

30 minutes later the swearing pregnant woman with melted chocolate in her hair and powdered sugar all over the front of her shirt and the kitchen floor really started questioning her sanity.

Oh, they turned out delicous. Just a huge, freakin' mess. lol!
